FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF WHIPPANY

Dear Members and Friends,

Our God comes to us in the ordinary things.

Jesus teaches about God’s Kingdom using ordinary stories—stories of a person sweeping their house, a seed that grows, a person who labors, a light that shines. And, Jesus is born a baby, ordinary, and yet divine. The ordinary is God’s realm, the place where God works.

Where in your ordinary living has God shown up this summer?

We jump into September hopeful, better yet, confident (!) that God works in and through the ordinary parts of us and our lives—to bring about peace, to tell the story of love, to comfort and heal, and to increase our joy.

And, yet, every Sunday in September at FPC Whippany is far from ordinary:

September 2nd- Don Kiddoo, resident historian, leads worship

and shares the story of a woman who grew up in our town

September 9th- Blessing of the Backpacks and the Celebration of Communion

September 16th- The Baptism of Frankie, Weston, Lucy SanRoman and George O’Dell,

with a luncheon to follow

September 23rd- Celebration of our 50 Year Members and Potluck

September 30th- Mission Trip Sunday,

our youth share stories from their mission trips,

and we worship the God of transformation

In September, summer’s relaxed weeks collide with fall’s fast paced days, and we are all ‘back at it.’ Back to school, back to work, back to routine. Fall is the season of homecomings. I’m so grateful to call FPC Whippany home, and this church my family, and I look forward to our wonderful fall together.

With love,

Pastor Sarah

Hanover Township Day - September 8, 1-5 pm

Stop by our church table!

Hanover Township Recreation invites everyone to celebrate Hanover Township Day on Saturday, September 8 from 1 pm to 5 pm at Malapardis Park in Cedar Knolls.  The rain date is Sunday, September 9 from 1 p.m.to 5 p.m. at Malapardis Park.

This Township-wide event is free to our residents and features, music, activities, demonstrations, exhibits, and food.

This is a great opportunity for REACHING OUT to our neighbors with our presence in the community. Plan to wear your church t-shirt and stop by the church tables to help us greet our neighbors in the welcoming Spirit of Christ. Better yet, help us create our interactive exhibits and/or volunteer to spend an hour at one of the tables. Email or call Nancy Willans, Barbara Kitchell or the church office to say you would like to participate!

On Sunday, September 23 we will celebrate our 50-year members Marie Ringstad and Al & Sue VanNess!

After worship, we will continue our celebration with a potluck church picnic!

We'll gather on the front lawn with church friends new and old,  as we all return to our fall routines.

Sign-up on the board outside the church office, and let us know if you can bring a salad, side, or dessert

Join us this fall for FPCW Book Club!

Hands & Hearts Recognition –  November 4 during Coffee Hour

THANK YOU--two simple but powerful words that we say too infrequently.  The Mission Committee would like to start their new mission by saying “Thank you” to everyone for their faithful and joyful support of our church. If you have sent a get-well card, cooked or served a meal, sung in our church choir, served as a deacon or elder, pledged financial support, traveled to Mt. Top, prayed for ill members, or served in so many other ways, we invite you, all God’s volunteers, to our Hands and Hearts Recognition Event on November 4 immediately following church. Please join us as we kick off the work of our new Mission Committee by thanking everyone and highlighting the many, many ways you serve our church and our community.

Sunday School Registration is now in full swing. You may fill out the form below or stop by our CE table in Parish Hall to sign up for the 2018-2019 school year.  We are planning yet another fantastic year with our youth ~ through Scripture, drama, crafts, games, computers and so much more we hope to inspire our youth and set their faith on fire.  We hope some of you would like to join the fun as we could always use Sunday School teachers, assistants and substitutes.

FIRST DAY OF SUNDAY SCHOOL IS SEPTEMBER 16

Our youth will kick off the Fall of 2018 by learning how to stand against the enemy’s schemes by putting on the Armor of God – Scripture found in Ephesians 6:10-18.

conversation at the conclusion of worship. We will escort the youth to Parish Hall at the end of our Sunday School lessons.

For the safety of our youth we would like the children to refrain from jumping off the front of the stage in Parish Hall…

please use the steps on either side to  enter or exit the stage area.

DEACONS NEWS

On Sunday, August 26th we served the summer meal at the homeless shelter.  Our staff included Evelyn and Otto Bertram and John and Sue Hartmann.  We served 55 meals plus seconds.  As usual, the residents were grateful and complimentary.  They enjoyed the macaroni salad and said it was heavenly.

THANK YOU for all the sugar, cereal, wafer cookies, and salad dressings you provided.  These donations were helpful.

We are switching to our winter meal in September and will be looking for donations of canned tomatoes, kidney beans, INSTANT rice, creamy salad dressings, and bags of sugar.  Please leave your donation in the gray box by the coat closet.

With gratitude,

The Board of Deacons

PS.  Our church food pantry could use boxes of mac and cheese, soup, canned meat, toilet paper, and toiletries.
